Back to Basics

So it’s been a minute since I’ve sat down to write a blog and while I’m a big advocate for taking a minute, I do think I’ve taken a few too many!

Here we are in 2021 and shockingly enough we didn’t wake up on the 1st of January to find the world was ‘back to normal’. We haven’t all gotten back to filling our social calendars with birthday dinners and long weekends away, but instead, what I have done anyway is slipped into some old habits I would rather not admit I’ve fallen back into! Maybe that’s why I’ve finally sat to write this blog, maybe it’s my way of holding myself accountable to myself! Anyway I digress, who remembers the days of early 2020 lockdown, when we were catching up with friends on FaceTime, friends we maybe didn’t even see that often? Or pulling out the recipe book to find something yummy to treat ourselves to at the weekend? I don’t know about you but I’ve stopped doing these simple things that brought so much joy and I don’t know why because life hasn’t ‘returned to normal’ so what’s my excuse?! Unfortunately I think it’s because lockdown life became the ordinary and making an effort slowly faded.

Well, I set some goals for myself at the start of 2021, (not one for resolutions, so I went for goals!) and the main goal was to find the joy in everyday. So my internet friends, I am here to share with you some of the things I’ve been doing to help me find joy, even when things are rubbish. Which in essence is taking day to day life back to basics.

  • Select one of your favourite songs, the one that you can’t help but dance to when you listen to it, even if it’s just a shoulder shimmy, actually especially if it’s a shoulder shimmy everyone knows that’s the best dance move anyway! Turn it up loud, prepare you favourite hot drink, and dance around the kitchen while you do! I promise you will be doing this every time you make a hot drink in the future … if you don’t sing and dance in the kitchen when you’re doing absolutely every kitchen task you need to start! Doing the dishes, dancing! Peeling potatoes, dancing! Baking a cake, you guessed it, dancing!
  • Prepare an old childhood favourite for dinner, it doesn’t matter what it is or that it won’t taste as good as when your mum cooks it. There is nothing more comforting than sitting down to a meal that evokes nostalgia.
  • Bake your favourite cake and split it in half. Keep a half (or a quarter or a just a slice) for yourself, cause you know you deserve some cake, and with the rest, take it over to your neighbours, because they deserve some cake too!
  • Buy the expensive biscuits that you usually only get at Christmas or when family are coming to visit, light a candle, snuggle down with a good book or movie and eat as many biscuits as you want!!!
  • Organise a night out, at home! So whether you recreate your favourite meal from your favourite restaurant or your favourite cocktails, get dressed up, and I mean dressed up not just a new tracksuit, for the occasion! If you live alone, like me that’s ok, invite your support bubble round or get yourself on FaceTime with your best friend (making sure the person knows its a dress up occasion!) and enjoy an evening out while staying in!
  • Make an effort to get outside at least once a day. Cabin fever is real and it’s will affect your day, I had completely fallen out of my one walk a day routine and my mood day to day was definitely getting worse. Getting outside, even when its freezing, and even if its just a walk to the corner shop for some milk, makes the world of difference. Set your alarm 30 minutes early and make the effort to start your day with a little fresh air.

I hope if things are too much at the moment or if you are struggling in the mundaneness of the day to day, that even one of these tips helps you find a moment of joy, lightness or peace in your every day. Remember that life still isn’t normal, even if there aren’t queues outside the supermarket and the pressures of work are back, we are all just doing the best we can.
